How To Read Race Horse Form Guides

So you’ve read the Tipsters views on who they think will win todays races. And now its your turn. Sure, you could go with the popular concensus, but what about looking at the form guide for the horses in the race?

You’ll find the Form Guide when you sign in to your selected online bookmaker and select the race that you are interested in placing a bet in. You’ll be faced with a screen like this;

Precise Tips guide to how to read Race Horse Form Guides

Theres a lot of information on a form guide that could help you get the edge. Lets go through them from left to right.

Firstly, you can see the Name of the horse, the horses number in the race and the colours that the jockey will be wearing in the race.  These are always listed with the heaviest horse wearing Number 1 (the Top Weight) and go down in weight for each subsequent horse.

The small number in brackets in this part of the Form guide indicates the draw (or stall) that the horse has been placed in to start the race. The Lower the number the closer to the rail the horse will be. This can have advantages and disadvantages depending on the course, which is why its always handy to check out our Race Course Guides as well. The names under the horses name are the Jockey and the Trainer of the horse.

Understanding the Horses previous Form

The next section in the race card are the previous form numbers.  They show the position that the horse has finished in its previous races and run right to left, with the most recent result being the furthest right figure.
As you can see from our example there are some other symbols in the previous form. These all have a meaning.

– The figures 1-9 denotes the horses finishing position
– The number 0 means that the horse finished outside the top 10 finishers
– The symbol “-” separates racing seasons and the numbers to the left of that are for the previous season. Sometimes a “/” is used to donate this or a longer gap – it depends on the race card
– P or PU means that the horse was Pulled Up and did not complete the race.
– F indicates that he horse fell, and R means that the horse refused a fence
– BD indicates that a horse was bought down by another runner and U or UR shows us that the horse unseated its rider during the race.

Original ratings, Age and Handicapping of Horses

Under the recent form guide is the OR number. This is the Official Rating of the horse. The higher this rating is the better the horse (in theory) is. The OR number is also used by Handicappers to decide how much weight the horse should carry to even up the race.
Next you can see the age of the horse, and the Weight. The weight is the combined total of the jockey and any extra lead that they have to carry (as determined by the handicappers) in the race.

Current and Previous Odds Prices

Finally, to the far right you can see the current odds. The numbers under them are the previous odds in this race for the horse and indicate whether more or less money is being backed on the horse to win. Studying this can be crucial, especially not long before the race as the odds change depending on the money put on the horse to win.

More money placed shortens the odds and vice versa – and when people can see the horse trackside before the race they can see whether the horse in more or less likely to perform. Watching the odds change can be a factor that helps you decide whether your choice has a chance of winning.

Extra Online Racecard symbols

There are also some other symbols on a Race Card and they include;
C – This indicates that the horse has previously run at this course
D- This indicates tha the horse has previously won at this Distance
C;D – tells you that the horse has previously won over this course at this distance
BF – tells you that this horse was a Beaten Favourite in its last race

Note that not every Online Bookmaker will show all these different symbols and shortcodes in the order that we have explained them, and some might miss some of them out altogether, but you’ll soon get the hang of it!

So, using the Form Guide, the Course Guide, our Free Daily Racing Tips and some good old fashioned experience or gut feeling can really help you pick winning horses!
