A Guide To Wolverhampton Race Course
Although there has been a racecourse in Wolverhampton, England since 1825 it would have been a much different prospect than the offering that Wolverhampton racecourse offers today.
The course was redeveloped in 1993 to install floodlights and an artificial surface made of Fibresand – a mixture of recycled sand, wax and rubber – to turn Wolverhampton into an All Weather track. This was then replaced again in 2014 after the track was replaced with Tapeta, another artificial surface with similar properties . Tapeta is less stressful on the horses than Fibresand, and equates with “Good” going on turf courses.
The course hosts race meets throughout the year with the Lady Wulfruna Stakes the most prestigious race on its calendar.
The Lady Wulfruna Stakes is a Listed race open to horses aged 4 years and older and is run over a distance of 7 furlongs and 36 yards. It is run every March.
Wolverhampton racecourse is one of the busiest racecourses in the United Kingdom, hosting 80 fixtures per year. It has a course distance of 1 mile around, and is left handed, meaning that all the turns are too the left. This makes Wolverhampton the closest track in style to American racetracks.
