A Guide to Thirsk Race Course
Overview
Loacated in North Yorskshire, England, Thirsk racecourse opened to the public in 1923. The course is very popular with Northern based horse trainers with most race meetings taking place in the Summer months.
The highlight of the Thirsk racing calendar is the Thirsk Hunt Cup, which is run in May every year. It is raced over a distance of 7 furlongs and 218 yards and usually attracts a reasonable sized field.
The course itself is a classic oval shape with a spur at the base to allow straight sprints. It’s a left handed course which measures at 1 mile and 2 furlongs. The bends are quite tight but the track itself is almost completely flat throughout.
The final run in is just about 4 furlongs in length and the spur allows for straight line racing over 6 furlongs. This part of the track has slight undulations.
