A Guide to Pontefract Race Course

A Guide To Pontefract Race Course

Based in West Yorkshire, England, racing in Pontefract is said to go back as far as 1648 when the races took place in the meadows surrounding the local castle. Although it isn’t one of Yorkshires major courses it does hold some prestigious races including the Pontefract Castle Stakes every June.

The race is open to fillies and mares aged four years or older. It is raced over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 5 yards.

The original course was a horseshoe shape but in 1983 it was converted into a full circuit measuring about 2 miles. This makes it one of the longest racecourses in Europe.

The course is left handed with some considerable hills and troughs combining with a massive 6 furlong uphill finish. The emphasis for horses racing at Pontefract is for them to have stamina over speed.

Bullet Points

  • Left Handed course
  • Very hilly
  • Course circuit length of about 2 miles
  • A massive 6 furlong uphill run in to the finish
