A Guide to Newmarket Race Course
A Guide To Newmarket Race Course
Situated in Suffolk, England, Newmarket racecourse is actually two separate racecourses in one. It is home to the largest number of training yards in the country. Newmarket hosts two of the Countries five Classic races – the 1000 Guineas and the 2000 Guineas. It hosts 9 of British Racings 36 Group 1 races.
The Rowley Mile Course at Newmarket is a 2 mile and 4 furlong dogleg course which is unusual insofar as it is not circular. Any races that are 1mile and 2 furlongs or less in length start at the dogleg and run the straight mile to the finishing line. Racing takes place on the Rowley mile during April and May. It then switches to the July course until returning to the Rowley Mile for the Autumn part of the season.
The July course is slightly shorter at 2 miles and 1 furlong in length, but the final straight mile is not only full of slopes and dips, the final 2 furlongs are then back uphill again, making this a test for the horses.
- The Rowley course is a downhill run and then a long uphill finish
- The July course is a downhill run, a steep uphill and then a slight downturn to the finish
- The Rowley mile is the longest straight in the British racing
