A Guide to Newcastle Race Course
Overview
Also known as Gosforth Park, Newcastle racecourse opened to the public in 1882 . Today it offers both Flat and National Hunt racing and has both a turf course and an all weather track.
The highlight of the Flat season at Newcastle is the June meeting for the Northumberland Plate. The meeting is a three day event and hosts not only the Northumberland Plate, but also the Gosforth Park Cup and the ChipChase Stakes.
Newcastle also stages the Fighting Fifth Hurdle on grass. This race is on of three that make up the Triple Crown of two mile races in the UK. The race is run in November and is a grade 1 listed race open to all horses aged 4 years old or more.
The All Weather track is a left handed affair made of Tapeta. Tapeta is made up of sand, rubber and wax and makes up a racing surface that is about 4-7 inches deep. Newcastles All Weather track differs to most as not only is it a broadly circular track (unlike the more familiar oval), but that is also has a floodlit straight mile. The All weather track is 1 mile and 6 furlongs long with an uphill incline over the last 4 furlongs to the finish.
The turf track is also left handed and is the same length as the All Weather track with the same steep uphill finish. The grass racecourse at Newcastle has 10 fences for its Chase events, of which two are open ditches and 7 fences for its Hurdles cards.
