A Guide to Kempton Park Race Course
Overview
Situated in Sunbury on Thames in England, Kempton has a rich tradition in the horse racing world and is one of the largest venues in the United Kingdom. This is mainly due to the venue having a grass track for Jump racing, and an All Weather track for Flat racing.
The course opened in 1878 and Kempton added the All Weather track, which is made of Polytrack, and floodlighting in 2006 to facilitate Flat racing.
The Turf track hosts the annual King George VI Chase which is held every Boxing Day as is the Kauto Star Novices Chase – also a Grade 1 race.
Jump racing events run at Kempton from September through to April, and Flat Racing meetings happen all year round.
The All Weather track is a right handed oval and depending on which loop is used is either 8 furlongs or 10 furlongs in length. The turf based National Hunt course is a triangular circuit that is 1 mile and five furlongs in distance, flat and has a 220 yard run in to the finish line. It is also right handed and has 9 fences.
