A Guide To Fakenham Race Course
Fakenham is the only National Hunt racecourse in Norfolk. Its patron is Prince Charles. It evolved from the West Norfolk Hunt that had run since 1884 and the first official meeting at the venue was in 1905. In those days some of the races started in the fields around Fakenham before finishing on the real course.
The course is left handed and unusually for a race track is almost square shaped. The course is the tightest jumps tracks in the country and measure 1 mile in circuit length.
Because of the tight turns this track favours front runners. There are 6 fences per circuit with the fifth fence being an open ditch.
Due to the make up of the ground, the going is usually one move heavier than is advertised on race day, making this race more of a test of stamina and endurance rather than hurdling ability.
