A Guide to Exeter Race Course

A Guide To Exeter Race Course

Locally, Exeter racecourse is known as Haldon racecourse because of its location on the top of Haldon Hills, but before it was officially known as Exeter racecourse it was officially known as the Devon and Exeter course.

Horse racing has been run at the site since the 17th Century and is the home of the Haldon Gold Cup, A Grade 2 Steeplechase open to horse of 4 years old and older. It is run over a distance of 2 miles, 1 furlong and 109 yards and has been won by horses including Cue Card and Best Mate.

Historically, Exeter race course was the site of the last ever pistol duel. In 1833 Peter Hennis and Sir John Jeffcott drew pistols to settle an argument. Hennis was wounded and later died. Jeffcott fled to Sierra Leone
