A Guide to Chester Race Course

Affectionately known as “The Roodee” Chester racecourse is in the Guinness Book of Records as the Oldest Racecourse Still In Operation due to records showing that racing started at the course in 1539. This was done with the consent of the Mayor at the time, Henry Gee, whos name gave rise to the nickname for horses – geegees.

Chester is one of the smallest of the significant racecourses in the United Kingdowm at only 1 mile and 1 furlong in distance. Roughly toilet bowl shaped, it is a left handed course used only for Flat racing, and has a very short straight at only 239 yards, making it a disadvantage for long striding horses.

The shape of the track means that the horses are almost constantly on the turn – another disadvantage for long striding horses. The shape of the track and the length of the straight mean that its better for the jockey to lead from the front, as there is little room to make up for any errors in judgement.

The course itself is only a short stroll away from the beautiful city of Chester making this an ideal location of weekends away.

Bullet Points
