A Guide to Chelmsford Race Course

A Guide To Chelmsford Race Course

Originally called Great Leighs racecourse, Chelmsford racecourse only opened in 2008, the first entirely new racecourse in the UK since Taunton opened its doors back in 1927. Sadly, it went bankrupt in 2009 and racing at Chelmsford only resumed in 2015.

Chelmsford is a left handed course measuring 8.5 furlongs and is made of Polytrack instead of grass. Polytrack is a mixture of sand, recycled carpet, and rubber. The entire mixture is then coated in wax. All races are on the Flat.

Among the notable races on this all weather track are the Chelmer Fillies Stakes and the Queen Charlotte Fillies stakes.

The Chelmer Fillies stakes is run in May every year and is open to 3 year old Fillies who race over a distance of 6 furlongs. The Queen Charlotte Fillies stakes is open to fillies that are 4 years and older and run over a slightly longer distance of 7 furlongs.

Being a manufactured track the dimensions are roughly even all the way round and are split into two sweeping bends and two straights, each measuring around two furlongs each.
