A Guide to Brighton Race Course
Nestled on the edge of the South Downs, Brighton Racecourse is about 400 feet above sea level. It was established in 1783 by the Duke of Cumberland and is one of only a handful of racecourses in the United Kingdom that isn’t comprised of a complete circuit.
The course is 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 196 yards long and built in a U shape. It used to be longer, but was shortened due to a golf course built on the extended acreage. The course is a left handed one with a four furlong slight uphill finish which comes after a fairly steep downhill section. Race meetings are held throughout the Summer.
All race meetings are on the flat – there are no fences.
Brighton Racecourse used to be very popular but as times changed the course lost its glamour and status. It is now one of the smaller racecourses in Britain offering an average of about £26,000 in prize money per meeting.
The biggest meeting at Brighton is the Annual Brighton Festival which runs in August, taking up three of the 18 days per year that racing take place here. The prestige race at this event is the Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy which is open to horses aged three years and older.
