A Guide to Beverley Race Course

A Guide to Beverley Race Course

Racing at Beverley in East Yorkshire was first established way back in 1690 but didn’t feature regular racing until the late 1800’s. it currently hold 19 days of racing each year including two listed races – the Hilary Needler Trophy and the Beverley Bullet Sprint.

Both of these races are run in the Summer with the former being run in May and the latter in August. Both races are run over 5 furlongs.

The Hilary Needler Trophy is open to fillies aged 2 years old. The Beverley Bullet Sprint is open to fillies aged 3 years and older.

The course right handed and measures just over 1 mile and 3 furlongs in a broadly oval shape. It is mainly flat apart from an uphill finish. Beverley has the most pronounced draw bias of any UK racecourse on its 5 furlong course. This makes racing on the course the equivalent of driving on a reverse camber bend so a wide draw in these races is an advantage.

The uphill finish at Beverley Racecourse was used as a runway for the RAF during the Second World War.
