A Guide To Ascot Race Course

Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire is one of the Premier racecourses in the United Kingdom. It hosts 13 of Britains 36 annual Group 1 horse races.

Ascot holds 26 days of racing between May and October and 8 meetings in the winter months. The most famous of these is Royal Ascot which is held every June and attracts crowds in the region of around 300,000 people making it the best attended race meeting in Europe.

Other notable meetings include the Ascot Chase in January, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July and the British Champions Day which is held in October,

The racecourse has close ties with the Royal Family due to its close proximity to Windsor Castle. It was opened in 1711 by Queen Anne.

The racecourse has been used three times in James Bond Films. In 1985, Roger Moore (playing James Bond) is at the course during a meeting when he is trying to defeat Max Zorin in A View To A Kill. In 1995 the Entrance to Ascot doubled as St Petersburg Airport for the film Goldeneye, and in Skyfall (2012) the same entrance was used as a double for Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

The course itself is roughly triangle shaped, with all races up to 7 furlongs being run on the straight part of the course. The course is relatively flat and measures 1 mile and 6 furlongs in overall distance. All races are run clockwise.
